Optimism was all the buzz at IBS 2015

DCW 2015: Smarter, Leaner Organizations a Cause for Optimism in US Building Market

We’re a couple weeks removed from the biggest trade event of the year –  Design and Construction Week 2015.  In year’s past, we took this time to digest what we saw, follow-up on press opportunities and take a collective sigh of relief.  As we discussed in our recent newsletter, our team walked the equivalent of a 1/2 marathon in three days. It’s an exhausting grind physically but even more so mentally. It takes time to truly process what we saw and offer insight to the big trends our team noted during the show. Individual products are only a piece of a larger pattern – what was the overall macro trend?

“From Despair Comes Improvement”

The overall consensus of both our clients and other attendees was renewed optimism about the marketplace as a whole. Few believe we’ll ever return to the levels saw before the market collapse and to be frank – that’s a good thing. Companies are emerging from the recession smarter and more efficient on all facets of their business. When production and demand slowed, organizations had to re-think their operations and approach. What we’re seeing now are organizations better structured for sales optimization and better controlled supply chain. Several sales professionals at the show said their company had invested, or were making plans to invest, in CRM systems to better track their output and offer better alignment with marketing to close leads. In one particular booth, I was given a demo of their leads gathering process. The tried and true card scan remained the first step. From there though, the data was exported directly into the company’s CRM system and an automated email, based on the person’s geographic location, was sent from the sales professional covering the territory’s own email.  No sifting through hundreds of Excel files after the show. The company was able to strike while the iron was hot. Marketing and Sales working in-step? Now there’s a trend this agency can get behind.

It’s hard to find a positive from the economic downturn. This said, companies appear to have taken this time to look in the mirror and improve from within. The result?  A smarter organization.

Our Picks for the Best New Products at this year’s IBS Show

So we’ve talked about the amount of walking we did, the trends we saw and the sentiment among the attendees. What about new products? You can’t have a trade show issue without discussing the star attraction. Our team compiled their favorites and we left it to a vote. With over 1,300 vendors, there were ample choices this year. Unlike year’s past, we didn’t have any parameters to fill – just pick what you felt was a truly innovative and cool product.

Without further adieu, here’s the Kleber & Associates top products from Building and Construction Week 2015.

Bosch Power ReadyWC18CF-102_500x330 r122216v33
You pull up to a job and are greeted with the dreaded battery drain – the small wane of the drill then dead silence. If you don’t have another battery or an outlet to connect the charger, that $200 drill was out of action for the day. Enter Bosch and their new Power Ready charging solution. Compatible with all Bosch 18V battery packs, Power Ready is a technology using contact-less energy transfer, also known as inductive charging.

Per Bosch: “when the charger is plugged in and the compatible battery is placed on it, the charger begins wirelessly transmitting an alternating magnetic field. The battery, featuring an internal copper coil, acts as a receiver. As the alternating magnetic field penetrates the coil, voltage is induced and a charging current flows to the cells until full. Similar to conventional charging, the battery and charger are in constant communication during the charge process to ensure proper charge and a long battery life.” No plug or replacing the battery? Power Ready is truly a game changer in the power tool space.

Creative Mines: Synthetic Surfaces Continue to Amazecreative_mines

Nature’s canvas, with its unique qualities that give each installation a personalized look, has long been sought for homeowners seeking a high-end finish in harmony with nature. It’s natural properties- the texture, sheen and patterns- that offer one-of-a-kind options for the homeowner. With natural-sourced materials being a premium price point, two companies in particular are emerging as leaders in this new synthetic space. We first met the team at Creative Mines at the 2014 Pacific Coast Builders Show in San Francisco. Over those past six months, Creative Mines has developed a portfolio of stunning veneer stone surfaces, both naturally sourced and crafted options. Unlike other manufacturers, Creative Mines keeps sustainable sourcing core to their operations. Rather than using fly-ash by=product, for example, the company uses a high-purity, natural pumice pozzolan that “enhances compressive strength, minimizes efflorescence, resists sulfate attack, reduces permeability and improves durability.” The end result is a near flawless application rivaling stones pulled from the mine.  Eco-Top, an Asian based manufacturer, took the nature’s look one step further and was showcasing its new wall-hung synthetic panels. When our team first walked by, we honestly thought it was natural wood and wondered how they cut is so thin. The realism and texture was as close to natural as we’ve seen at a show. Company reps said the veneer is made for wall-mount but additional products were in development. Synthetics have come a long way since the wood paneling we had in our parent’s basement.

Arch KitCameraZOOM-20150122121936046[1]

The Romans first pioneered the use of arches in their designs – noting their rigidty and structural strength. The design was so revered in fact, Roman engineers designed the city’s aquaduct system using the principle for bringing water to its citizens across hundreds of miles. In design, the arch is still a popular addition that adds a bold structure to a roof. Its’ construction, however, can be a taxing process requiring a craftsman. Enter Universal Arch Kits – an out of the box system that allows builders a complete arch solution with minimal install time. Universal has multiple options including Archways, Dome Ceilings, Groin Vaults, Barrel Vaults and Cove Ceilings

Design and Construction Week 2015: Our Team’s Top Trends, Observations

So what were the prevailing trends at Design and Construction Week? With four team members on the floor, K&A was fully immersed in the experience. We asked our associates to compile their observations on what seemed prevalent and what resonated with them.

Kevo by Kwikset allows users to send a code via a product mobile application which can open a door wherever there's internet connectivity.

Joey Peters – Account Director
“The continued integration of technology amazes me. It seemed like every manufacturer had some sort of mobile application you could download for a variety of functions. From selecting color/textures to opening your front door from thousands of miles away, technology is king. And it’s no longer a frivolous extra for consumers – retailers I spoke with said these products are being expected now – particularly from younger buyers. The digital native’s influence is omnipresent – manufacturers are scrambling to keep up with their needs. The mobile application is a powerful connection and opportunity for these brands, however. Downloading an app puts a brand into the user’s digital dashboard where they essentially live their life from communications to banking and beyond. It wasn’t just applications either. Places to charge mobile devices in genius locations also caught my eye. Where you can put a USB port, companies were taking advantage. I spoke with one countertop manufacturer  experimenting with a powered surface – making the entire countertop a charging station. You adhere a sticker to the phone’s back and place it on the surface wherever you like. Meeting the demands of a modern  consumer isn’t just for electronics – it’s here to stay with our industry as well.”

GE made waves with its' new Keurig machine integration

Dominique LesCallet –  Account Executive
“Bright colors were everywhere.  I saw several manufacturers display brightly colored products, e.g. Feeney, Masonite, Electrolux (KBIS), Kohler (KBIS), Dacor (KBIS), True (KBIS). Kitchens and bathswith bold, bright colors allow homeowners to customize their spaces based on personality. “It wasn’t just colors – fashion-inspired patterns were a popular attraction as well. Manufacturers are incorporating fashion design into interiors decorating more than ever before, e.g. tiles and flooring, kitchen and bath backsplashes, etc. With advances in technology, manufacturers can replicate natural textures with amazing accuracy. One of the cooler trends on the KBIS side were Espresso and Coffee Makers Integrated into Kitchens – Several manufacturers, including GE and Gaggenau, are now offering in-home coffee and espresso makers for convenience. This was a pretty powerful validation the single serve coffee phenomenon is here to stay.”

Jasmine Gurley
Integrated lighting remains a big trend – particularly with the deck and railing category. With LED technology, manufacturers have the ability to integrate lighting versus a stand-alone accesorry. Within rails or sunken into deck panels, these lighting surfaces minimize space but offer a bold design element.

Bold Colors: Individual style was a big theme in the booths. From doors to interior roof panels, color was huge. And not just primary colors, either. Bright blues, deep reds and vibrant yellow could be found on all sorts of surfaces. It was an interesting premise – using an object not normally considered a style surface and making it a focal point. Consumers want to express themselves and these colors reflect that. Stock whites and browns are blank canvases – adding these colors starts the portrait.

Brands Put Best Foot Forward at Remodeling Show, DeckExpo, and JLC LIVE 2014

Bare Feet Wanted - Schluter SystemsShow-goers enjoyed a wide array of demonstrations, seminars, and interactive exhibits at this year’s Remodeling Show, DeckExpo, and JLC LIVE, including the multifaceted displays and events going on at JLC’s Tool Alley. Individual exhibitors on the exhibit hall floor featured many interactive displays, as well, as demonstrated by scores of show attendees who were willing to remove shoes to comply with the “Bare Feet Wanted” sign at the Schluter booth. Participating at the show for Kleber & Associates was president Steve Kleber, who enjoyed watching sock footed individuals line up to experience the warmth generated by Schluter’s new DITRA-HEAT electric floor warming system.  Schluter represents one of three companies we’d like to highlight in our show review, today, for their innovative and trend-setting products that remedy accessibility challenges while solving the age old problem of keeping the water in and the mold out. International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta Draws Large Crowd

The next stop in Kleber & Associates’ 2014 summer media tour was a homecoming for the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta held August 20-23. Regarded as one of the largest trade shows in the world, IWF features more than 1,000 exhibitors in the woodworking industry regardless of size or scale. It’s this unique component that makes IWF one of the more fun shows each year. Artisans, handcrafting turned bowls or chiseled furniture, share the same floor space as multi-million dollar CNC machines that can churn out thousands of pieces in an hour. It’s an excellent opportunity to see and experience an entire industry under one roof.

We were also pleased to see the continued positive energy and increased attendance at IWF like we’ve seen all year at trade shows nationwide since IBS in January. A slow, albeit steady, economic recovery certainly plays a role, but it’s also people getting back to work that is fueling the renewed optimism we feel.

Despite the smell of sawdust permeating the air, the K&A team challenged itself to find companies offering unique alternative materials to highlight. We walked the halls of the World Congress Center and found three we felt brought some truly innovative products.

Danver
As one of America’s leading manufacturer of stainless steel cabinetry. Danver provides a chic, stylish alternative to traditional wood cabinetry by forgoing wood completely in favor of state-of-the-art stainless steel; Danver provides custom and standard powder coated finishes and treatments for their stainless steel products that will enrich and accent any project. With both outdoor and indoor applications, the company has set the standard of the blend of contemporary looks and innovation in outdoor living.  We loved the use of a steel application in multiple color options –  it helps marry the home’s décor to the outside living area but with year-round durability.

Blum Inc.
Blum’s new LEGRABOX, a line of stainless steel cabinets and cabinet products, are built to meet the latest trends and demands of consumers seeking professional grade performance but fashionable design. LEGRABOX features a new, sleek design using modern materials like aluminum and stainless steel with matte color finishes. Featuring its own smooth closing BLUMOTION technology, Blum guarantees a silent close every time. LEGRABOX also features several organizational tools such as inner pull outs and removable boxes in the drawers, giving users multiple options for storage optimization. We expect LEGRABOX to be a standout product in 2015 and in the future.

Rev-A-Shelf
A long-time favorite of K&A, Rev-A-Shelf always brings an innovative suite of products to their trade show booth, For IWF, the company was highlighting its lineup of Tresco Lighting enhancements for cabinets in a variety of installation configurations. With cutting edge LED advances, Rev-A-Shelf is able to illuminate previously shaded storage areas for easier use and access.

Rev-A-Shelf  of course had their legendary kitchen cabinet products and designs on display as well. Several of their designs feature smooth open and close drawers, state-of-the-art pull downs and pull outs featuring dynamic hinges utilizing previously unusable space. A new drawer mounted utensil and knife organizer was a crowd favorite.

2014 AIA Convention – Highlights from Kleber & Associates

2014 AIA Convention: Chicago, IL
For the first stop on the agency’s summer road tour, Kleber & Associates was back in Chicago for the 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Expo. This year’s theme was “purpose” — a challenge to industry professionals in attendance to exercise leadership and engage the public to design a more sustainable world. With over 450 convention programs and nearly 800 exhibitors, the AIA Convention and Expo featured various specialty pavilions with a focus on concrete, stone and tile, composites, lighting, metals, software and technology, wood and sustainable energy.  At the center of the Convention and Expo was continuing education- a chance for architects to earn as many CEU credits as possible throughout the three day event.

Companies such as Feeney, Inc., Residential Elevators, ClimateMaster, Cardinal Shower Enclosures, Dri-Design, Old Castle Architecture and Earthcore were among the exhibitors displaying stand-out products for unique design and sustainable living.

Feeney, Inc. LED Rail Light Kits for DesignRail

Feeney, Inc. LED Rail Light Kits for DesignRail

Feeney, Inc.
Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum architectural products and railing systems, featured LED Rail Light Kits for it’s DesignRail® line of aluminum railing. Functional as both an outdoor lighting accent and a visual aid for low-light areas, the new LED Rail Light Kits are the latest addition to Feeney’s popular DesignRail®. The warm white LED light is designed to recess into the underside of the top and bottom rails of DesignRail® railing systems, while the snap-on frosted lens evenly diffuses light over outdoor porch and deck areas. The new LED Rail Light Kits are available in two sizes, a 21 inch length and a 32 inch length, providing fuller light distribution than systems using smaller lighting components. Power Kits (required for installation) include either  35 , 60, or 96 watt 24 volt drivers. The new LED Rail Light Kits blend high-style design with the latest technology.

Residential Elevators
Elevating the standard of living, Residential Elevators, Inc. (REI) highlighted various options for in-home elevator systems, including the Luxury Lift LLT 950- Variable speed traction residential elevator. Quiet, smooth and reliable, the advanced system provides dependable vertical transportation in the home. The benefit of the Luxury Lift Traction Elevation is that REI has developed a technology without the need for a dedicated machine room, saving square footage in the home.

ClimateMaster
For more than 50 years, ClimateMaster has serviced the needs of the commercial and residential construction industry worldwide with a comprehensive line of water source and geothermal heat pumps. A geothermal heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth’s groundwater to raise or lower the temperature of a heating/cooling medium.

Cardinal Shower Enclosures
Cardinal Shower Enclosures featured a wide-array of both sliding door and swing door enclosures, for both residential and commercial applications. The Skyline Series sliding door enclosure made a bold impression, with large exposed wheels holding the sliding door. Available in both 3/8-inch and ½-inch glass, and with three or four wheels. Much like the increasing trend of interior “barn-style” doors, the Skyline Series is sure to fit the bill for design elegance in the home, as well as luxury commercial spaces, such as hotels and resorts.

Dri-Design
Dri-Design’s meticulous engineering has developed a 100 percent recyclable, pressure equalized rain-screen and architectural metal wall panel system that attaches to nearly any substrate without the use of clips or extrusions. A one-of-a-kind standout at the show was Dri-Design’s architectural panels with imaging technology. Using a variety of custom perforations to create images, Dri-Design imaging makes a strong architectural statement.

OldCastle Image - LM

Oldcastle Architect
Brand new from Oldcastle® is InsulTech™, an insulated concrete masonry system. 2014 Dwell on Design – Highlights

dwell001Feeling nostalgic for the bygone Goldrush days, the K&A team headed west to Dwell on Design (Dwell) in Los Angeles, California.  The Dwell show featured thousands of products and hundreds of programs on three separate soundstages, focusing on innovative, marketable designs in urban construction, modern design and green living.

K&A hosted several client Industrial Design representatives at this annual “incubation lab” event, where we conducted extensive research on popular trends and emerging themes. From small desk accessories to full size cargo containers reclaimed as new age living spaces… the opportunities at the show were rich for exploring dramatic new fabrications and innovative solutions. The forum provided our client brands with a detailed environment from which to “blue-sky” product development ideas amid break-through introductions from around the globe. One theme in a particular semblance-of-harmony we’re titling: “Surface Solutions,” representing significant new approaches to outward facing layers and facades that interact most intimately with our human audiences.

dwell002Stikwood is a midrange price “peel and stick” wood planking overlay for surfaces such as walls, ceilings and countertops which is finished with AirPure: a non-toxic, formaldehyde free natural plant oil. One of the main promotional draws of Stikwood is its ease of application, particularly impressive in an industry dominated by high costs and complicated installation methods. The result is a highly textured surface rendered with an old world craftsmanship appearance in a cost-effective solution. In addition to the unique attributes of the product itself, we were naturally impressed with the brand’s go-to-market strategy, led by robust social media engagement.

dwell003Finium’s Friendlywall follows a similar path of simplified installation in wood-planked-skin walls. The pieces of Friendlywall fit together, much akin to a room-sized jigsaw puzzle. Interlocking pieces can be chained together across a wall or even an entire room.  The Canada based company stresses eco-friendly products and consumer accessibility as its major selling points.

dwell004Giving new meaning to a bun-warmer? Galanter & Jones is a California based design and fabrication studio that is family run and operated, specializing in heated outdoor seating. Their newest product pictured here is the Helios Lounge, featuring a plug-in bench with a heated surface and adjustable temperature controls. We recognize that the heart of the home is now the backyard and as such, homeowners desire to enjoy their outdoor living rooms throughout the changing seasons. This innovative product complements this trend while featuring an ergonomic design that radiates heat outwards, designed to warm one’s entire body. Unexpected, is how incredibly energy efficient these “hot” seats really are.

dwell005Like accessories for the “little black dress” in the fashion world, so too can cabinetry be updated with entire new looks. Who would have thought that cost-conscious Ikea cabinets could be improved?  Semihandmade cabinet doors – which ships its doors across the country and plans to set up shop soon in Ikea — offers an affordable solution to dress up Ikea cabinets to  look like fine crafted, high quality custom cabinetry at a fraction of the cost. The best of both worlds… cost effective boxes and frames with doors designed to express your own design priorities. I wonder if Swatch Watches ever thought about introducing a cabinet line with mood compatible, swap-able doors?

The importance of innovations like these at Dwell on Design is that they not only represent emerging aesthetic trends in the market; but perhaps as important, environmentalism and affordability. Each highlight here represents a major shift towards eco-friendly and sustainability-orientated crafting methods –with an emphasis on the surface and its relationship to dwellers. I’m convinced we’ll continue to see momentum in this arena for home and building products for the foreseeable future. Stay tuned!

2014 NeoCon Highlights

Kleber and Associates summer road tour rolled into the Windy City last month for NeoCon® 2014- North America’s largest design show and conference for commercial interiors. The show draws more than 40,000 attendees each year from the architecture and design industry eager to see the latest trends.

As we waited in lines for elevators and weaved in and out of the over 700 showrooms and exhibits, we came across a variety of innovative products and resources for corporate hospitality, healthcare, retail, and various other commercial applications. We couldn’t list them all, so here is a collection of K&A’s favorite standout products from NeoCon 2014.

neocon001Forbo

With a single connection hidden beneath the surface, you can keep the area clean and clutter-free, eliminating all those tangled wires or preoccupied power outlets. HI-MACS TechTop has the makings of an ingenious solution for those wanting to stay connected – good riddance wires!

Richlite

Richlite Company is a manufacturer of paper-based composite panels offering a warm and natural-feeling surface. Richlite’s unique paper surfaces bring a soft and comfortable ambiance to a room that’s rarely achieved through cold, hard, strong and plastic solid surfaces. It’s made from environmentally sustainable resources and is an attractive, durable long-lasting material that complements a variety of tastes. Applications include kitchen/bath, retail and restaurant surfaces, as well as various other unique applications.

revlite-ling-1340-Editeos Light Panel System

The eos Light Panel System is an ultra-slim sheet of light that combines LED lighting technology and an exclusive 3D cutting process to give you a versatile light source. Its slim profile and low power draw make the eos Light Panel System usable in a large number of applications including indoor, outdoor, accent, lighting, etc. The system consumes up to 70 percent less power than a fluorescent lamp. The initial cost may be higher, but energy savings and overall durability is exceedingly better.
